Homeopathic Medicine

In the early part of the 19th century, Samuel Hahnemann developed the system of medicine we now call homeopathy. The basic principle of homeopathy is that disease is a result of a disordered “vital force” and that to find permanent cure, one must use a medicine (or remedy) that is “vital” and has the potential for stimulating a healing response bringing the body back to a normal, healthy state. Hahnemann found that potentized, micro-dilutions of natural substances had the power to radically change a person’s state of health, provided that the remedy totally matched the disease expressions and overall state (mentally, emotionally and physically) of the patient. Remedies are chosen based on the homeopathic principle that “like cures like”. The clinical characteristics of a homeopathic remedy must match the overall expression of the state of the person.

Taking a homeopathic case not only takes into consideration the symptoms related to the dis-ease of the patient, but also takes into consideration the whole person, including how they are affected by the various situations and stresses in their life. As a result, over the course of homoeopathic treatment not only do symptoms disappear, but the person is in a much healthier state overall.

Nutritional Counseling

The cornerstone of good health is a healthy diet which focuses on the consumption of whole, natural foods. Your diet provides the necessary building blocks for your body, including your muscles, bones, connective tissue, hormones, enzymes and cells. Poor nutritional status impacts the function of every cell in your body. A health-promoting diet is important for, disease prevention, optimal health, long-term wellness and for supporting your body’s self-healing ability, particularly in cases of chronic illness.

Improving nutritional status may require diet alone, or may require the additional support of specific nutritional supplements. These supplements may be used as a complement to good dietary practices and are implemented only secondarily to a healthy diet. In order to optimize nutrition, we will investigate the link between diet and your specific health concerns, consider which foods are best suited to your age, gender and constitution, identify any individual food sensitivities which may be negatively impacting your health and ensure optimal function of your digestive system.

Bowen Technique

Bowen Technique is a gentle but powerful technique that works by balancing the autonomic nervous system, which controls more than 80% of our bodily functions. The nervous system functions like a vast communication network. Feedback is constantly exchanged among different parts of the brain. Tapping into these feedback loops and adding new information can accelerate healing – this is the philosophy behind the Bowen technique.

A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle but precise mobilizations performed by the thumbs or fingers on muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerve sheaths. First, the skin is pulled to the side of the structure; gentle pressure is then applied to the edge of the muscle to a point of resistance. This challenges the muscle and pushes it out of its normal position. Next, a gentle rolling move is performed over the structure while maintaining gentle pressure on the site. This stimulates the proprioceptors’ sending of information through the nervous system to the brain. The body is sent a message that the emergency is over, and it is now possible to initiate healing.

Put simply, a Bowen treatment resets the body and allows it to heal itself. After each series of Bowen moves, there is an important pause to allow the body to respond to new information from the proprioceptors. It is during this pause that the body begins to make changes.

Acupuncture (TCM)

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest and most commonly used forms of medicine in the world. It is rooted in 5000 years of practice and has been verified by modern research. According to TCM, there is an energy network, which travels under the surface of our skin and communicates with our organs, nerves, circulatory system, hormones, muscles, digestive tract and all systems of the body. When this energy network is compromised, by blockage or weakness, pain or maladies will be observed.

The goal of acupuncture is to restore balance and proper energy flow to our body, through insertion of fine needles (sterile, disposable needles) into the skin at specific points or points of tenderness. This will encourage health and healing of all of our cells, organs and tissues.

Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle Medicine involves the modification of lifestyle factors like lack of activity, unhealthy diet and a poor ability to cope with stress. That these factors can become major contributors to the development of chronic illness. Lifestyle medicine is a primary element in the practice of naturopathic medicine. It involves the goal of therapeutic lifestyle changes that result in optimal health and disease prevention. Naturopathic doctors are the most rigorously trained primary healthcare providers providing lifestyle medicine. A Naturopathic doctor will first identify the individual lifestyle factors that are contributing to illness. From this information health goals are created and obstacles to achieving the goals are established and tools are established to assist in the smooth integration of lifestyle changes. On going coaching and monitoring is provided as the patient progresses towards achieving the behavior modifications.
